Boot failure after Thinkpad splash screen

Hi,

I have Thinkpad R61 T8300,XP SP 3,14.1",Nvidia quadra.

Currently I must leave the machine in standby mode to ensure its useability.

A few months ago on power down and later reboot the machine would power down within seconds of displaying the Thinkpad splash screen.I searched the forums for advice on this problem and tried all suggested solutions for the problem(remove power cord and battery, press power button 10 times etc)to no avail.

(1)

When the problem occurs,I remove the powercord, press the power button, with battery connected,no activity(no battery light activity either).

I insert the a/c lead, press the power button, remove the a/c lead immediately( "jump start" the battery),machine attempts to boot on battery, thinkpad splash screen appears, fan activates, hard drive powers up,power dies.Re-press power button,no battery light & no activity.Repeat process immediately ...same behaviour.

(2)

I remove the battery, insert mains cable, power light comes on.Press power button(battery is still removed),splash screen displays, fan audible, hdd activity audible, machine powers down(sounds like all power is removed from device),power light stays on but power button does not work.Remove & re insert mains cable, repeat process same results.

Eventually, after repeating all of the above in order or in a random order the machine boots fine, the quickest I have managed to acheive this is 30 minutes minimum.

I can live with the machine being on standby all the time when I am office based but effectively it is no longer portable as the above process's don't gaurantee boot up.For example, last night I tried all the above for an hour to no avail.Unplugged machine, battery and a/c,returned 7hr later, tried all above again,20 minutes later machine boots after repeated attempts using the above methods.

Could anybody suggest what hardware issues could be causing this.Ram is fine, working in other machines.I am reasonably confident with hardware and will try anything to resolve this. The machine is no longer under warranty so I have not got much to loose but I love this machine, when its working its the most solid & stable laptop I have ever used.Would cleaning the internals or re thermal greasing cpu / whatever help?.

Any  advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Boot failure after Thinkpad splash screen

Welcome to the forum!

All of what you've described does sound like a hardware problem. Download PC-doctor for DOS, burn the disk and boor from it. Run all the diagnostics and report back.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Re: Boot failure after Thinkpad splash screen

Hi George,

Thanks for the reply.

Ran pc doctor as discussed, all tests passed except when I ran the Thermal shutdown by EC test.It got to 1 or 2% then shutdown(as though I removed the battery and a/c at the same). That happened about 2 hours ago and I have not been able to boot since to see if there was a log created.

Would I be correct to suggest this is indicating a heatsink/fan issue?.

Thanks in advance.
