Hi there!!
I recently installed a new IDE 80gb on my T-43 ThinkPad.
Since then and every time I open my pad I get this strange error massage:
“2010: warning: your internal hard disk drive (hdd) may not function correctly on this system. Ensure that your hdd is supported on this system and that the latest hdd firmware is installed.”
Than it gives me two options: press ESC or F1. Every time I open my pad I need to press the ESC button..
Windows 7 is my new operating system so I tried to get the latest bios version from Lenovo site, But there are no updates available for windows 7. I tried to download the vista bios update (1yuj18us.exe) but I get “eflash” error when I’m trying to install it..
Thank you very much. I appreciate any idea to solve this..

Welcome to the forum!
Most non-IBM drives trigger this error on T43 units. Your choices are:
a) Learn to live with it.
b) Get an IBM OEM drive or a newer Fujitsu one such as MHV2120AH
c) Downgrade the BIOS to 1.03 or older-this may or may not work depending on the drive used.
A ton of good information is available here:

Good luck.

Downgrading the BIOS, as previously stated, may or may not work with your drive.
It also brings certain risks and should be avoided in general. Your graphics and fan may need additional third-party software to work properly, and, as always, there's a risk of bricking the machine altogether.
If the error goes away after downgrading, it won't matter much which OS you're running.
Good luck.

I have been trying to get rid of the 2010 error on a T43, replacing a failed hard drive. I have tried both a Hitachi IC25N060ATMR04-0 (removed from an HP) and a Hitachi 5K160 (Refurbished, Hitachi-certified, sealed package). I have used multiple different revisions of the IBM firmware without success. The batch file claims a firmware update is not required. I proceeded to manually force the update. The existing firmware of the drives differs from the BIN and TBL files on the firmware disc by 1 digit - the second to last one. The 5K160 firmware is SB40A70H. The pattern of file names indicates it should be xxA79H. Similarly with the IC25N drive the existing firmware is M03OAD5A, but the files are all xxADGA. Are these firmware revisions too old to update? Is there another firmware download available that would apply? Would a BIOS downgrade possibly fix the problem, and if so, where can I find the old BIOS? Current BIOS is v1.26. The Embedded Controller is version 1.05. Is there a patch regarding the controller?
Thank you for any help - I have lost alot of sleep, pulled alot of hair and screamed at generally anyone who even looked at me for the past week.

Hello pc-details,
George is right downgrading is risky and the fan will be problably more disturbing.
You´ll never get rid of the 2010 failure, there is a tip, that will end in the situation, that you only have to wait till the displayed 2010 failure display will pass (without pressing ESC) and the system then will boot.
I would suggest to buy an T42, there is no 2010 error and you can use it with a very fast Samsung IDE hdd
HM160HC SpinPoint 160GB (bulk), which really speed up you system.

On most non-IBM drives, firmware update is downright useless. It works best on older IBM drives that initially trigger the error because they're from "pre-T43" era.
Fujitsus have been safe in my experience, and I've installed dozens of them. The problem here being, many people know this, and while the drives are no longer in production, sealed examples catch over $100 easily for 120GB drives.
T43s are generally far safer, as well as faster units than the rest of the T4x generation, but have quirks of their own, this being one of the two most often discussed ones...(the other one being a lound fan)...
Good luck.

Thank you both for your replies, which basically confirmed what I had already concluded. I also learned of the fan issue and I know a lot more about drive geometry that I did before.
Replacing the laptop is not an option; I am a tech, fixing this for a customer. I had already changed the BIOS setting to skip hitting the Escape key. I gave the owner the choice of paying me extra to get a Fujitsu drive and get rid of the error or live with the 2 beeps when he starts it up. He decided to live with the 2 beeps and ignore the error message.
But now I am on a mission to resolve the issue if / when I see it again.
I will continue to watch this forum for any updated information.
Sincerely,
Paula
