a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I am ready to buy a powerful workstation to replace my aging dell desktop. I will mainly use the computer for photoshop CS3 or CS4, and web surfing. I have a few quesitons and wonder anyone can help:

1. S20 VS D20

I do not need dual processors, but I really care about the noise. Is S20 as quiet as a typical desktop computer these days (like Dell Optiplex series)? Further, is D20 much quieter than S20 due to more space?

2. Operating System

Is S20/D20 compatible with Windows 7 64 bit? I can get Windows 7 for free from my university so I do not need it to be installed. But if the computer has only DOS on it, where do I get the drivers for chips in motherboard and other components? Will there be a driver CD?

3. upgrading memory

The price to upgrade memories on lenovo is a bit hefty. Do you guys have experience of buying from third parties like crucial.com? Someone told me that for the new generation of CPU, I'd better have 3 memory sticks to utilize the triple-feature of the CPU (Not sure exactly what that means). So I am thinking of get 2 GB in one slot from Lenovo, and getting another two 2 GB memory sticks from somewhere else. Anything do I need to be aware of when choosing memories?

4. Ubuntu

Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu on thinkstation S20/D20? I am quite interested in trying it out.

Thanks a lot for answering these questions!

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

welcome to the forum!

1:  the D20 is rated 1db quieter than the S20.   depending on where you have your system located and the internal components used, your results will vary.   for example, five 15K RPM SAS drives and a loud video card in a D20 will be louder than one 7200 RPM SATA drive and a quiet video card in an S20.   the answer here is, "it depends." :smileywink:

2:  the S20/D20 are compatible with windows 7.   drivers for each system are available on lenovo.com.   if you purchase a system with a DOS license (which is how my D10 was configured), your hard drive(s) will arrive blank and you will get a driver CD for windows.   the latest drivers are online so the CD won't be necessary.

3:  third-party memory will work just fine.   lenovo offers their own memory for customers who need their memory to be supported under the system warranty.   when choosing memory, it's best to match speeds.   also, uDIMMs and RDIMMs cannot be mixed.

4:  regarding ubuntu, you may be interested in the linux discussion here on the forum.   i haven't seen many thinkstation users running linux simply because it lacks support for typical applications used in the industry.   lenovo does offer some linux drivers for the thinkstation lineup but i can't say to what extent an S20/D20 will be supported under ubuntu.   admittedly, i haven't touched linux since 15 years ago when redhat and slackware were unknown names and it took half a day of hacking to get Xfree86/X11R6 working correctly.

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

Thanks a lot Erik! This is very helpful. I will probably stick with S20 then. I will install two 7200 rpm SATA hard drive, and NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 32-core (512MB,DVI + DP) --- is this regarded as a noisy video card?

Could you educate me a bit on the installation process after I get the machine with DOS? Shall I first  install the Windows 7, and then update the drivers using the CD or via the Internet? Is there a link to update drivers?

Further, I plan to get 6 GB memory in total. Will there be any performance difference  if I have my total memory as below:

slot1: 1 GB, slot2: 1 GB, slot 3: 2 GB, slot 4: 2 GB,

Or: Slot1: 2 GB, Slot 2: 2 GB. Slot 3: 2 GB

Finally, I am pondering the RAID 0 option in S20. Is the RAID card a "True" hardware raid, or a software one?

Thanks a lot again!

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

i haven't heard the FX 580 personally.   from experience, i can say that the smaller the fan, the louder it is.   for example, my FX 4800 is silent compared to the FX 370 that came with my D10.   of course, nvidia could have improved acoustics with the latest refresh.

windows 7 will more than likely install most if not all of the drivers you need -- some of which will come directly from lenovo.   when i installed server 2008 R2 on two of my systems, i only needed to update a handful of drivers.   it was actually quite automated.

with 6 GB i would recommend going with three 2 GB modules if possible.   the difference between 1+1+2+2 likely won't be noticeable compared to 2+2+2 -- it's just better to match module sizes whenever possible.

if you plan to use SATA RAID, you'll be using the onboard intel ICH10R controller.   this is known as "fake RAID" since it uses the CPU to control data processing.   considering that your CPU is markedly faster than any dedicated RAID controller processor, onboard RAID tends to be quite fast.   plus, if your system planar (motherboard) ever dies, your array can be moved to a new planar without having to rebuild.   about the only benefit to using a dedicated RAID card is battery backup.   but, if you keep your system on a UPS (which is recommended anyway), the risk of writing bad data to a software RAID array is very, very minimal.

on a personal note... if your budget allows, you may want to consider running two SSDs (SLC if possible) in RAID 0 for your OS and two SATA drives in RAID 1 for data.   your system will be extremely fast and still have some redundancy.   you'd need to put your user folder on the SATA array since it risks being lost on the SSD array in the event of a drive failure.   or, since SSDs are quite fast as-is, you could run the SSDs in RAID 1 (which will give RAID 0 read speeds and single drive write speeds) and still benefit from the redundancy.   food for thought. :smileywink:

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

Wow...thanks again Erik! I just placed the order for S20. I will keep in mind the SSD thing for future upgrade when it becomes a bit cheaper.

You really helped me a lot during this process.

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

Hi,

>if you plan to use SATA RAID, you'll be using the onboard intel ICH10R controller.

just a question concerning this issue: I am planning to buy a S20 preconfigured with XP. To use Intel ICH Raid it's necessary to use in bios the SATA option 'RAID' (instead of AHCI). The question is: With which bios SATA option is the preconfigured xp being installed? If it's being installed with AHCI then it's not possible to switch to intel raid without a completly reinstall of the os.

Thanks for any information

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

thorsten - welcome to the forum!

the answer to that depends on the type of array you plan to use.   RAID 1 can be used without having to reinstall.   RAID 0 or 5 are "destructive" and your OS and data will need to be reinstalled.   this is true of any RAID controller, not just the ICH10R.

speaking from experience, it's much faster to reinstall your OS no matter what type of array you use.   it can take hours upon hours to build a RAID 1 array by mirroring one drive to the other.   however, if you wipe both drives and start with a clean array, installing the OS takes less than an hour, especially if you use TVSU to install drivers.

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

Dont think this will be of help to the OP, but if you switch the memory on the configuration page for the S20, itll default to 1gb and save you something like $70... if you dont need 2 single 1GB sticks.

Okay, now Ive had fun with the raid setup.  I purchased the single 250gb drive and later upgraded to SSDs in raid 0.  You CANNOT reinstall the OEM restore software in RAID 0 and have it work right off the bat IF you DID NOT purchase the raid setup through Lenovo.  The preload partition does not have the proper drivers, and doing the driver install trick during boot does not work.

You will have to clean install, but before you do, make sure to extract your OEM product key to activate your appropriate copy of Vista (if you configured with it).  I do not know how the partition is setup with Windows 7.  Look up the ABR 1.0 tool to extract your OEM product key.

If you dont have an OS installed, just purchase one and install.

Oh, and for memory, you can buy crucial 6gb kit, PN CT3KIT25672BB1067S

You have 6 memory slots, and you have to install on the blue slots first (2 4 6).

The FX 580 is very quiet, and the S20 itself is REALLY quiet when below ~75 deg ambient or so.

Re: a few questions on thinkstation --ready to buy

Thanks a lot to you for the information. Now my machine has arrived and I am ready to install the memories.

There is 1 GB memory come with the machine. I ordered four 2GB sticks from crucial.com. So how should I install  (5 sticks in total)?
