Windows Vista Service Pack 2

ThinkPad T61p 6459-CTO on Windows Vista Home Premium.

For over two months, Windows Vista SP 2 has been trying to get installed in my system but it systematically fails installation.

I have tried everything, from Google searching, posting in Microsoft's forums, searching Microsoft pages, tried to install manually, always with absolutely no success. What shocks me most is that in the Microsoft forums I get no reply, whatsoever. I'm just puzzled. All I could get from those forums was an answer to a similar installation failure, for a different Windows update (meanwhile resolved) that went like this: "Microsoft keeps flooding us with these worthless updates... Just hide it, and you will be fine"...

In all fairness, I found several materials about this issue in Microsoft's web pages. But I must humbly confess, I found them so confusing and so difficult to follow and to understand, at least for people with my level of knowledge, that I refrained from even attempting to do anything that I did not fully understand, afraid that I might end up creating major problems in my computer, instead of resolving an issue that, at least as far as I can tell, has not been causing major disruptions.

But I can't deny feeling uneasy with the uncertainty of the situation, which I would summarize like this: Is it safe to keep ignoring the issue and hide this SP2 update, or is it worth it to bring the issue up with a computer expert and pay for an analysis and, hopefully, to a solution?

Now, if at least someone, more knowledgeable than I, could assure me that this SP 2 package, rated by Microsoft as "Important", can harmlessly be hidden with no major consequences on security or even a big loss of functionality, that would help me a lot in taking a better informed decision.

Please... Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

Thank you for your reply.

No, I didn't. And I'm not sure I know what to do, exactly. Could you kindly provide more details on how to proceed? I'll be more than willing to pursue any possible way to try and resolve this issue.

Thanks again for any help. Best regards.

As a follow-up to my above response, I have checked with System Update and this is the current situation:

Critical updates: (0)

Recommended updates: (0)

Optional Updates: (16)

Extras: (5)

Not having any critical or recommended updates to be installed, I think I should be covered on this side. Still, any comments and/or suggestions will be very welcome.

Thank you.

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

System resources, such as file data, registry data, and even in-memory data, can develop inconsistencies during the lifetime of the operating system. These inconsistencies might be caused by various hardware failures or might be caused by software issues. In some cases, these inconsistencies can affect the Windows servicing store, and they can cause software updates not to work. The System Update Readiness Tool tries to resolve these inconsistencies.

Did you try to install the standalone version of the service pack?

Some more steps in think link

Re: Windows Vista Service Pack 2

vijaysaradhi:

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [September 2009] successfully installed in my system via Windows Automatic Updates on 11/‎12/‎2009.

I read somewhere that it is generally made available only to systems that may need it.

My question is: Where can I find it and how do I run it?

I have also read about frequent misgivings from people who encountered many different problems in their systems after this update was installed in their systems. In view of this, do you still think it will be worth going through these many steps, without any certainty that they will deliver the desired solution?

The update is rated "Important" by Microsoft, as opposed to "Recommended". What are the risks or problems most likely to arise from not installing it? Could you, please, elaborate a bit on this point, as well?

Thank you very much for your continued help and your patience.

Best regards.

Download the tool in the link i provided in the above posts.I dont know which version of windows vist you might be using so its upto to you to download it and run it once. The scan may take for 15 mins or more.

Try to install SP2 after the scan is done

I did download the file and installed it. It took exactly 55 minutes to finish installing.

Now, how do I run it? It did not ask me where to install it and I did not succeed in trying to locate it.

I still need your help, please.

Quite strange!... They could, at a minimum, have the program flag a word or two about what it had just finish doing. The only thing it said, after all those excruciating 55 minutes, when the progress bar itself did not even illuminate, was this: "Installation complete". No reference to any other task performed or results achieved.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining to you... It's just a statement of what happened, in case you find anything didn't seem to square off...

What I ask you is to please bear with me for a little longer. I'm going to try to install SP2 and I'll let you know the results.

Best regards.
