x200 tablet freezing

I have an x200 tablet that is randomly freezing on me.  The computer becomes totally unresponsive except for the cursor still being active.  I end up having to turn the power off and reboot.  I know some people on this forum seem to have had similar problems, any help would be greatly apreciated.  I can give more detailed description of the problem and what I've tried so far if necessary.

Here are my system specs:

Model: 7449-88U

CPU: SL9400(1.86GHz)

2GB RAM

160GB 7200rpm HD

Intel X4500HD

Intel 802.11agn wireless

Secure chip

Fingerprint reader

Intel Turbo Memory

8c Li-Ion

Vista Business 32

Re: x200 tablet freezing

First question, how many processes your machine has. Click Ctrl+Shift+esc, then go to process tab, you will see how many processes your system has.

You may like to disable something like Antivirus, Windows Defender, Diskeeper if you have. You should see a significant improvement by turn these 3 off.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

I have 116 processes running according to task manager - is this a lot?  I'm not running Diskeeper, and I've disabled windows defender, but I am running Symantec Endpoint Protection (antivirus/antispyware).  That's kind of a necessity though, isn't it?

Re: x200 tablet freezing

That's a lot. Vista clean install is about 40-50 processes running. But for notebook, it could have up to 70 processes or so because software which comes with the drivers. However, ThinkVantage suite has a number of utilities which are sometimes considered as ----- let's say this way--it's good, but not better than stock Windows.

I think you might get an idea why your computer is slow. If you think of antivirus is a must, then keep it.

You may list all your running processes, then I might be able to help you tell which is not necessary.

To list running processes, start >> "cmd" (hold Ctrl+shift & enter to run elevated)

When you get into command prompt, type "wmic processs"

It will list every running processes; you can right-click | mark then select them and enter to copy. So far you should be able to paste in here.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

I have the same model tablet (7449-88U), and had the same problem: frequently I would reach a point where the mouse pointer would move but not register clicks; the keyboard would register nothing except caps lock on/off and num lock on/off; and the only way out was to hold down the power button for five seconds to reboot. I believe it only happened when I was running in tablet mode, on battery, using the stylus, with Firefox running, but I'm not sure of all of that.

Researching it here and in other forums, I found similar problems with other ThinkPad models that indicated an incompatibility between the Turbo Memory and the Hybrid Disk Power Saver feature. In my case, I turned off the Hybrid Disk Power Saver feature, and have had no recurrence of the problem (and little diminishing of battery life). If this was indeed the problem, I expect that some future system update will correct this incompatibility. Note that I made this change halfway through the two weeks I've owned my x200 tablet, so it may be too soon to say that my problem is solved, but I hope this points you in a helpful direction.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

This sounds EXACTLY like what's happening to me.  The only difference is that it doens't happen when I'm using the stylus (I don't use tablet mode very often).  But the symptoms you describe are identical to mine, and like you my computer only seems to freeze this way when I'm running on battery power and using firefox (with some word documents open as well usually).  How did you turn off the Hybrid Disk Power Saver feature?  I adjusted some settings in Power Manager, but I'm still having the same problem.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

It's in the Power Options control panel. You need to look at the settings for each of your plans (which come into play situationally) and, in the Hard Drive section, disable the feature. This blog post has good directions and a screen shot. This forum thread is a long discussion of the problem dating to a predecessor model to our x200T.

I associated the problem with stylus use, but the significant factor might actually be holding the tablet in my hands or on my lap, as many people seem to find the Active Protection System playing a part in the lock-ups. Thus, a combination of factors -- including two Intel features (Turbo Memory and HDPS) and one ThinkPad feature (APS) -- seems to cause the problem.

The good news, I suppose, is that people have reported success in stopping the freezes by disabling any one of the three factors. It's nice to have a choice of which feature to sacrifice, but it would be nicer to have access to all the features of our notebook. As the conflict has been noted and discussed for nearly two years, I think it's to Lenovo's discredit that a new model ThinkPad has the same problem when run according to out-of-the-box default settings.

One other note: I now have had a couple of freezes since disabling HDPS, but these differed from the problem we're discussing because the application title bars showed "Application not responding" and the freezes resolved themselves if I waited about twenty seconds, so I suspect these freezes come from an unrelated problem.

Good luck with your new ThinkPad. I'm honestly optimistic that these conflicts and glitches can be and will be worked out with software updates.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

Thanks!  I found and disabled the hybrid sleep setting in every plower plan listed.  Hopefully that resolves it.  I'll post again if the problem recurs.  It is kind of uncool though that such a longstanding (and pretty darned annoying) problem has not been addressed by a Lenovo software update yet.  Hopefully they'll get on it soon.  This glitch aside, the x200 tablet is pretty awesome, imo.

Re: x200 tablet freezing

This problem is not new and I returned mine for another a couple of months back.  My thread I started (scroll down a little or check page 2) is still waiting for Soap's response to want he/she finds.  After further digging I have my doubts whether it was the digitizer but ...I also posted a thread on Tablet PC review's site and had another half dozen people with similar issues with theirs as well.

My replacement locked up once and I just did a fresh install ( My recovery partion had a bad image and I had a install file that was corrupt). Since then I have had no lockups thouh I didn't install the Power Manager either :smileywink:
